Prakriya meaning "Following Nature's Wisdom" is derived from the root Sanskrit word "Prakruti" meaning "Nature". Prakriya also means "Process". So, Prakriya -"the green wisdom school", was envisioned as a school that seriously respects the wisdom of nature within ourselves as well as in our environment. Prakriya is anchored by a group of people who believe that education in schools must have as a setting a community of concerned, warm, and enthusiastic people and a campus which is interesting to children, gives them space for free expression and of course is green with a large variety of plants and trees. Children need roots as well as wings. Children get "roots" by relating to parents, teachers and adults who are warm, loving and strong people, people who search for meaningfulness in their lives and persist in living by their convictions. Children get wings - creativity, sense of adventure as well as responsibility for themselves and the world around them, when the learning process is fulfilling, holistic and experiential.
For teachers at Prakriya, nurturing children in a way that helps them develop roots and wings, is not their "work" alone, but a way of life that is enlivening and meaningful to themselves. At Prakriya, nobody is just an employee. We are all part of a community.
